Readability
- Target approximately a sixth grade reading level
- Use dark type on a light background
- Use a 14 point or higher font
Quality
- Aim for accurate, current, and sufficient information for its purpose
- Consider the age of the patient
- Demonstrate cultural and socioeconomic sensitivity
Organization
- Emphasize key points
- Use effective titles that reflect content
- Utilize ample white space with headings and subheadings to break up the text
Style and Language
- Be friendly, positive, and gender free
- Avoid the passive voice
- Use common and specific words in short sentences
- Include illustrations featuring simple line drawings
